Our client is an accounting firm dedicated exclusively to serving churches and nonprofit organizations.
This role calls for a versatile accounting professional comfortable working across the full spectrum of nonprofit and religious organization finance. Deep, hands-on experience with churches, dioceses, denominational offices, and 501(c)(3) organizations is central to this role. Engagements are built around the specific fund accounting, compliance, and reporting needs of mission-driven organizations, and clients range from lay volunteers to boards requiring formal financial reporting.
Responsibilities
Provide hands-on bookkeeping support and training to client staff or volunteers, including chart of accounts setup, fund accounting, and transaction coding specific to church and nonprofit environments
Experience with grant accounting
Review and reconcile bank, credit card, and general ledger accounts
Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards (FASB ASC 958)
Assist clients with budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and grant or restricted fund tracking
Serve as outsourced controller for clients needing higher-level oversight, including internal controls review, policy development, and board-level financial reporting
Prepare clients for financial statement audits, reviews, or compilations, including documentation organization and coordination with external auditors
Support Form 990 preparation and other nonprofit compliance requirements
Identify process improvements and internal control gaps, recommending solutions scaled to each client's size and resources
Communicate clearly and patiently with clients of varying accounting knowledge, including volunteer and lay leadership
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism consistent with a mission-driven client base
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
3-5 years of progressive fund accounting experience
3-5 years of experience serving churches, dioceses, denominational offices, or 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations (required — this is a core qualification for the role)
1+ year of experience training or coaching bookkeepers, treasurers, or administrative staff
Demonstrated ability to work across a range of skill levels, from basic bookkeeping instruction to controller-level financial oversight
Working knowledge of fund accounting principles and FASB nonprofit reporting standards
Strong understanding of internal controls and audit-readiness practices
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain accounting concepts to non-accountants
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines independently
Reliable access to a computer and internet
Preferred Qualifications
CPA license or active progress toward CPA certification
Experience preparing organizations for a Single Audit
Familiarity with Form 990 and nonprofit tax compliance
