The Registered Nurse is responsible for the coordinating of and performing direct nursing care for patients, utilizing concepts of the nursing process. Serves as resource, preceptor, mentor and leader for physicians, professional peers, and other fellow employees.Collaborates closely with physicians to assess, design, coordinate, implement, and evaluate the patient’s plan of care and the patient’s outcomes. Demonstrates the necessary skills and knowledge to provide complex nursing skills and delegates tasks to other team members according to job specific competencies as appropriate to the age of the patients served as delineated in the Urgent Aid Scope of Care. Responsible for and monitors the quality of patient care and patient satisfaction. Accurately and independently pursues professional development opportunities. Assumes responsibility to assure the daily operations of the department are effectively and efficiently maintained.
Responsibilities
Delivers care in a financially responsible manner, conserving resources, supporting budget and staffing guidelines, and ensuring patient safety
Follows proper identification procedures prior to giving care
Functions as an interactive resource in clinical and professional practice and is responsible for designing, coordinating, implementing and evaluating patient care and utilizing the concepts of the nursing process. Acts as an advocate for patient and families
Initiates a patient assessment upon presentation to the Urgent Aid and completes in accordance with unit standards
Utilizes interviewing skills in identifying patient’s chief complaint
Coordinates and prioritizes diagnostic testing according to patient diagnosis and individualized needs
Demonstrates ability to handle emergency situations in a prompt, precise and professional manner
Maintains effective communication (verbal and written) with patients, family or significant other, physicians and other members of the health care team
Ensures a safe environment in collaboration with staff by employing and enforcing infection control and safety practices and procedures as outlined by departmental hospital policy
Assures accurate and complete documentation of patient care in the Urgent Aid record in accordance with approved policy and procedures
Participates in the orientation of new staff to the unit and serve as a resource by identifying appropriate learning opportunities
Coordinates emergency team response and availability of equipment; evaluates effectiveness and recommends changes to departmental protocols
Performs other duties as assigned and/or as necessary to meet the needs of the department or customer
Responsible for meeting JCAHO and other regulatory bodies’ requirements for practice, patient care and quality improvement
Fulfills career and professional development requirements by acquiring and maintaining appropriate certifications, pursuing further education, preparing and presenting department in services
Assists other team members in enhancing their knowledge, skills and abilities
Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, which affect position
Requirements
1 year Emergency Department or Med/Surg experience
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, ADN
Current Registered Nurse Licensure State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation or valid temporary permit to practice nursing in the State of Illinois
Must have worked in an acute care or related role providing nursing care to patients within at least the last five years
Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
