The Unity Game Designer is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and prototyping engaging gameplay experiences using Unity. This role bridges creative game design and practical implementation, transforming ideas into interactive prototypes while ensuring gameplay mechanics are fun, intuitive, and aligned with project objectives.
The Unity Game Designer collaborates closely with Game Designers, Developers, Artists, and Product Teams to validate concepts, refine player experiences, and contribute to the successful development of games and interactive products.
Key Responsibilities
Game Design &
Concept Development
Design innovative gameplay mechanics, systems, and player experiences.
Develop game concepts that align with project goals, target audiences, and business objectives.
Create gameplay loops, progression systems, and engagement mechanics.
Translate creative ideas into functional prototypes within Unity.
Contribute to feature ideation and gameplay innovation.
Unity Prototyping &
Implementation
Build gameplay prototypes and proof-of-concepts using Unity.
Configure game objects, interactions, UI elements, and gameplay systems within Unity.
Collaborate with Developers to ensure design feasibility and implementation quality.
Test and iterate on gameplay mechanics based on feedback and performance objectives.
Assist in validating technical feasibility during the design process.
Documentation &
Design Communication
Create and maintain Game Design Documents (GDDs), feature specifications, flowcharts, and wireframes.
Clearly communicate gameplay intentions and requirements to cross-functional teams.
Document core gameplay loops, progression systems, player interactions, and feature functionality.
Present concepts and prototypes to stakeholders and team members.
Gameplay Testing &
Optimization
Conduct gameplay testing and identify opportunities for improvement.
Gather feedback from team members, stakeholders, and players.
Refine mechanics, balancing, and player progression based on testing results.
Support data-informed design decisions where applicable.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Artists, Developers, QA, Product Managers, and other stakeholders.
Ensure gameplay experiences align with visual, technical, and business requirements.
Participate in brainstorming sessions and creative reviews.
Support production teams throughout development cycles.
Research &
Industry Awareness
Stay current with trends in game design, mobile gaming, casual games, and emerging technologies.
Research competitor products and successful game mechanics.
Apply industry insights to improve gameplay quality and innovation.
Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience in Game Design, Unity Game Design, or a related role.
Strong understanding of game mechanics, player psychology, progression systems, and engagement design.
Hands-on experience using Unity for gameplay prototyping and implementation.
Ability to create clear design documentation and gameplay specifications.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Passion for creating engaging player experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on mobile, casual, hyper-casual, or free-to-play games.
Familiarity with level design, systems design, or LiveOps features.
Basic scripting knowledge in C# is a plus.
Experience shipping commercial games or interactive products.
Portfolio demonstrating game design projects, prototypes, or released titles.
